ASL-interpreted performances

We want every story on our stage to reach every person in the room. On select performances, Encore provides American Sign Language interpretation so our Deaf and hard-of-hearing patrons can share fully in the magic of live theater.

What it is

Theater everyone can follow

At an ASL-interpreted performance, one or more qualified interpreters sign the show live, in view of the audience, as it unfolds on stage. The dialogue, the lyrics, and the feeling of the moment all come through — so Deaf and hard-of-hearing patrons experience the same story, at the same time, alongside everyone else.

Live interpretation

Qualified ASL interpreters sign the performance as it happens.

Select dates

We schedule interpreted dates on chosen productions and announce them ahead of time.

Why we do this

We believe live theater belongs to everyone. Access isn't an add-on at Encore — it's part of how we tell a story well. Offering ASL-interpreted performances is one of the ways we keep our doors, and our stage, open to the whole community. If interpretation would make a performance work for you or your family, we want to hear from you — it helps us decide where to offer it next.

Are you an ASL interpreter?

We're always glad to connect with qualified interpreters interested in working with us on interpreted performances. Reach out and introduce yourself.

What is an ASL-interpreted performance?
It's a regular Encore performance with qualified American Sign Language interpreters signing the show live, in view of the audience, so Deaf and hard-of-hearing patrons can follow the dialogue, lyrics, and story as it happens.
Is every show interpreted?
Not every show. We schedule ASL interpretation on select performances and announce those dates ahead of time. Join the email list and we'll let you know when one is coming up.
How do I request interpretation for a show?
Email hello@encorepa.org or call (435) 414-0049 as early as you can. The more notice we have, the better we can arrange it.
Where do interpreted seats sit?
We seat guests who want a clear view of the interpreter together in a reserved area. Let us know when you book and we'll take care of it.
I'm an interpreter — can I work with Encore?
Yes, please reach out. Email hello@encorepa.org and tell us a little about your experience.
