Backstage at Les Miserables

More Than Just a Show: Why Backstage Culture Matters at Encore

At Encore Performing Arts, we believe that what happens backstage is just as important as what happens under the lights. As we prepare to open Les Misérables, it’s easy to get caught up in the epic score, the sweeping story, and the incredible work happening onstage. But behind every cue, costume change, and quiet moment in the wings, there’s a culture we’ve worked hard to build—one that balances professionalism with positivity, structure with joy, and discipline with connection.

A Fun Yet Professional Environment

Rehearsing and performing Les Misérables is no small task. It’s a show that demands a high level of focus, maturity, and emotional commitment. But that doesn’t mean the backstage experience has to feel rigid or stressful. In fact, quite the opposite. At Encore, we’ve built a culture where professionalism and fun go hand in hand.

Our performers learn to be prepared, respectful, and dependable—but they also laugh, bond, and build lasting friendships. We believe that a supportive environment not only makes the experience more enjoyable, but also elevates the performance itself. When students feel safe, connected, and valued, they take bigger creative risks and step more confidently into their roles.

Friendships That Last Beyond the Final Curtain

One of the most powerful parts of any Encore production is watching friendships form. Backstage during Les Mis, you’ll find students sharing snacks, reviewing choreography together, or offering a quick word of encouragement before a big solo. These moments of connection are woven into the fabric of every show we do.

We know that theater teaches more than just stagecraft—it teaches empathy, collaboration, and how to work toward a common goal. For many of our students, the friendships they form here become some of the most meaningful parts of their journey.

Our Culture is the Foundation

We hold our students to a high standard—not just artistically, but as teammates, peers, and young professionals. Being part of an Encore show means showing up on time, being prepared, and treating everyone—cast, crew, and staff—with kindness and respect. But it also means laughing during warm-ups, celebrating each other’s victories, and supporting one another when things get tough.

That’s the Encore way. And as we step into opening week for Les Misérables, we’re proud not just of the show we’ve built—but of the community we’ve created backstage.

Because when the curtain falls and the lights go out, it’s the friendships, the fun, and the sense of purpose that our students carry with them. And that’s what makes this experience unforgettable.
