A Performance from the Heart: Les Misérables Sensory-Friendly Experience
This week, Encore Performing Arts had the privilege of sharing Les Misérables with one of our most meaningful audiences yet—families and individuals who attended our special sensory-friendly performance at the Electric Theater.
The evening was designed to be welcoming and accessible to guests with sensory sensitivities, disabilities, and anyone who might benefit from a more relaxed theater environment. It wasn’t just a performance—it was a celebration of connection, inclusivity, and the power of live theater to reach everyone.
The event began with a warm welcome from Adam Record, Executive Director of Encore, who shared our mission of creating opportunities for all young artists—and all audiences—to experience the magic of storytelling on stage. He then introduced Randy Sly, the director of Les Misérables, who took a moment to speak about the show and invited a few of our student leads to talk about their characters and what the roles meant to them personally.
Instead of a full-length show, the cast performed a concert-style highlights program, featuring some of the most beloved songs from Les Misérables. The audience was captivated by the music, and it was clear from the smiles, applause, and heartfelt reactions just how much this experience meant.
But perhaps the most powerful moment came after the final song, when cast members stepped down from the stage and into the audience—shaking hands, exchanging hugs, and spending time with our guests face to face. For many, this personal interaction was the most memorable part of the night.
At Encore, we talk often about how theater has the power to build empathy, create belonging, and change lives. This performance reminded us why we do what we do. It was a joy to see our young artists not only perform with excellence, but also connect with compassion.
Thank you to everyone who attended, and to the families who trusted us to share this story in a way that felt safe and accessible. It was truly a blessing to perform for this incredible crowd—and a night we won’t soon forget.
