Hadestown Page to Stage: From Our Stage to Broadway’s Best
Over 20 young artists joined Encore for our latest Page to Stage adventure, traveling from St. George to Salt Lake City’s Eccles Theater to experience the professional touring production of Hadestown. For many in our group, this wasn’t just another Broadway show—it was a chance to see a story they had already brought to life themselves.
Just over a year ago, Encore produced our own version of Hadestown, and many of Saturday’s attendees were cast members from that production. While they knew the music inside and out, most had never seen the show performed before. This created a unique opportunity to compare our production against the professional tour, and we’re proud to say the overall feedback was that both were really good.
We packed up early Saturday morning and made the 4.5-hour drive north. The production was stunning, and the post-show discussions were a highlight. Hearing our young artists share what worked, what they loved, and what surprised them gave them valuable experience learning to critique in a positive environment. The consensus was clear—it was incredibly well-produced and inspiring.
A few days before the trip, our group met at the Electric Theater for a workshop led by Randy Sly, Encore’s Director of Education. Randy guided students through the history of Hadestown, tracing the story from Greek mythology to the creation of the musical. This deeper context made the professional production even more meaningful, giving everyone a richer understanding of the artistic choices on stage.
Page to Stage has become one of our most popular programs because it gives young artists the opportunity to experience live theater together, learn about the history and development of shows, and gain insight that strengthens their own performances. We believe it deepens their growth as actors and participants in the performing arts.
Watch for our next Page to Stage event—we’d love to have you join us.
