Breaking Barriers with Theater: Encore’s ASL Performance of Les Misérables

On Saturday, May 3rd, Encore Performing Arts presented a powerful ASL-interpreted performance of Les Misérables at the Electric Theater in St. George, Utah. The performance was part of Encore’s ongoing commitment to making the arts more accessible to all, including members of the Deaf and hard of hearing community.

The sold-out performance brought a new layer of connection to the iconic story of justice, compassion, and redemption. With professional interpreters embedded into the flow of the show, ASL users experienced the music and storytelling in real time, alongside the rest of the audience.

“This wasn’t just about translating words,” said Executive Director Adam Record. “It was about ensuring that every audience member could feel the full emotional weight of the performance, whether through music, movement, or interpretation.”

Encore worked closely with professional ASL interpreters Ginger and Mary to thoughtfully integrate the interpreters into the production process. Their involvement ensured that every detail—from stage blocking to lighting cues—was coordinated with accessibility in mind.

“Encore was absolutely wonderful to work with from start to finish, they were incredibly accommodating and helpful throughout the entire process, ensuring that every detail was thoughtfully addressed. Their commitment to accessibility was especially impressive—attendees who required interpreters were not only well supported, but also expressed how much they enjoyed and appreciated the show. It was a pleasure collaborating with such a professional and inclusive organization.”

The ASL performance was one of several initiatives Encore is undertaking to make live theater more inclusive. In addition to sign language interpretation, Encore has introduced sensory-friendly performances, touch tours for blind guests, and community partnerships focused on inclusive audience engagement.

By embedding accessibility into the heart of its programming, Encore Performing Arts is ensuring that the transformative power of live theater is available to everyone.
