Youth helpers at Les Mis

When audiences come to see a production like Les Misérables, they’re swept up in the music, the emotion, and the unforgettable performances happening on stage. But just as impressive is the work that happens out of sight—where some of Encore’s most dedicated young artists ran the show behind the scenes.

At Encore, our mission has always been to create meaningful opportunities for young people—not just on stage, but in every corner of the theater. Our recent production of Les Misérables was a powerful example of that mission in action.

While the cast received well-deserved applause for their performances, a group of dedicated youth worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make every show run smoothly. These young artists took on big responsibilities—and absolutely delivered.

Kayla Morrison, our Assistant Stage Manager, was instrumental throughout the production. She helped manage scene changes, coordinate backstage flow, and ensured cast and crew were always where they needed to be. Her focus, professionalism, and calm presence anchored the team night after night.

Caydence and Boston were backstage heroes, assisting with quick changes, props, and general organization. They kept things running efficiently and helped create a calm, supportive environment for the cast.

In the tech booth, Gunnar ran sound, managing mic cues and audio levels with precision. Handling tech for a show like Les Mis is no small task, and Gunnar did it with focus and skill.

Ellie took charge of lighting, operating the board to help set the mood and highlight key moments with beautifully timed cues that enhanced the storytelling throughout the show.

Each of these students played a vital role in making the production a success—not just logistically, but emotionally. They showed leadership, teamwork, and a deep sense of commitment to the art form.

Les Misérables reminded us that young people don’t just shine in the spotlight—they thrive behind the scenes, too. We’re incredibly proud of this team and grateful for the way they brought their talents, energy, and heart to the production.

Encore will continue to make space for students to learn, grow, and lead—in the booth, backstage, and beyond. Because theater isn’t just about what happens on stage… it’s about the whole team working together to create something unforgettable.
